Static vs dynamic QR codes: which should you print?
By the InsightQR team
A static QR stores your destination directly. A dynamic QR stores a redirect link whose destination you can change. They can look almost identical on paper; what matters is the URL encoded inside.
Follow the link inside the image
Static: camera → your website. If the image encodes example.com/catalogue.pdf, that exact URL stays in the image. InsightQR does not need to handle the scan.
Dynamic: camera → InsightQR redirect → your website. You can update the last step from your dashboard while keeping the printed image. The redirect service must remain available.
Choose static for a link you control and expect to keep
A business card pointing to your stable homepage is a good candidate. Static codes have no provider-set expiry and need no subscription to scan. The destination can still break if you delete the page or let the domain lapse.
If you own the destination, you can change the content at that address. That does not change the encoded URL. A static QR does not report scans to InsightQR; your website may have its own visit analytics.
Choose dynamic when the printed material outlives the landing page
A brochure may need to open a new catalogue next month. An event poster may start with registration and later open recordings. A dynamic QR lets you move to another URL without reprinting either support.
Use separate codes for placements you want to measure separately. One QR used on both a poster and a flyer cannot tell those physical sources apart. Scan counts are not counts of unique people or sales.
Check the service terms before a large print run
Look at code limits, scan limits, editing access, analytics retention and cancellation behaviour. A free trial and a permanent free plan are different offers. For InsightQR’s current limits, read the pricing page.
InsightQR offers one free dynamic QR with Google sign-in. Existing dynamic codes continue redirecting to their last saved destination after a paid cancellation, subject to fair-use limits; editing and paid features are paused. Static downloads do not use the redirect service.
Make the choice before printing
You cannot turn an already printed static image into a dynamic QR through a dashboard. For an editable QR, save the dynamic code first, download that saved image and test it: scan once, change the destination, then scan the same proof again.
