Can you change a QR code after printing?

By the InsightQR team

You can change a dynamic QR’s destination after printing. You cannot change the URL encoded in a static image. If you control the old URL, you may still be able to fix what visitors see.

First, identify what the printed code actually contains

Scan with your phone and inspect the link offered by the camera before opening it. Your browser may show only the final destination after redirects. Check the original export or the QR provider dashboard if you are unsure.

A QR pointing through a provider’s redirect service may be editable from that account. A QR containing the destination page directly is static from the generator’s point of view. A paid-looking design or a logo does not establish which kind you have.

For an InsightQR dynamic code

Sign in to the account that created the code. Open the QR in your dashboard, change its destination URL and save. Use the saved QR image already on your printed material; you do not need a new image.

If smart routing is enabled, check its rules as well as the default URL. An active rule can send a scan somewhere other than the default destination. Editing must be available on your account’s current plan or subscription status.

Scan the physical print again. Confirm that the destination works without your logged-in session, including any PDF sharing permissions or form access.

For a static code pointing to a site you control

Keep the same URL and replace the page or PDF at that address. Alternatively, ask your site administrator to set up a redirect from the old path to the new page. This changes your website’s behaviour; the printed QR itself stays static.

For example, a printed code pointing to yoursite.com/menu can still work if you publish the new menu at /menu. You do not need to change the QR merely because prices or opening hours changed on that page.

If you do not control the destination

Contact the owner of the old page or the QR service account. If neither can update it, you will need a new printed code, a replacement sticker or a reprint. InsightQR cannot take over another provider’s redirect or rewrite a QR image already on paper.

For the replacement, use a destination you control or save a dynamic code before printing. Test a link change on one proof before committing to the whole batch.
